VPN Shortcut to the Desktop with Windows 7 Vista XP

Windows 7 adding a VPN connection shortcut to the desktop.

These directions are for existing VPN connections. So if you haven't setup your VPN connection yet, please do so now.

I've been asked about creating shortcuts to a VPN on the desktop several times. So it must be something that isn't easily found with a Google search? Whatever the reason is, here you go.

Windows 7 & Vista VPN Shortcut Directions

After your VPN connection has been configured. Follow these steps to add a shortcut to your 7 or Vista desktop.

  1. Click the Start circle then Control Panel
  2. Click Network and Internet
  3. Click Network and Sharing Center
  4. In the left hand menu click Change adapter settings **
  5. Find the VPN connection
  6. Right click the VPN connection and choose Create Shortcut
  7. Choose to save the shortcut to the desktop when asked

Notes:

** In Windows Vista you would click Manage network connections

Windows XP VPN Shortcut Directions

After your VPN connection has been configured. Follow these steps to add a shortcut to your XP desktop.

  1. Click the Start menu
  2. Click Network Connections
  3. Find the VPN connection
  4. Right click the VPN connection and choose Create shortcut
  5. Choose to create the shortcut on the desktop when asked

Setup a VPN Connection

To create a shortcut to the VPN connection, a VPN must first be setup.
